A Walk on the Beach
Direct my footsteps according to your word;
let no sin rule over me. Psalm 119:133
I love going to the beach but I don’t like sand. Not a great combination, I know but luckily,
it doesn’t stop me from going. The vast
cool green water of the Gulf of Mexico and the powdery white softness of its
shores truly is evidence of God’s amazing creation. I just don’t like the itchy feeling that comes
from sand sticking to my skin and getting in my clothes. It’s also so difficult
to walk on.
The other day, after a visit to the beach, I was following my
husband, Mark, back to the pier. I found
that if I walked in the footsteps he left in the sand, it was so much easier to
navigate my way back. I knew Mark would
take the best route and because he’d already compacted the sand with his steps,
it gave me a place to plant my feet without the ankle turning wobble that comes
when I create my own path. As I found
yet another foot print to step in, it occurred to me that following God can
provide the same stability. We want to
follow a path that He has set for us, a path following Him. Doing so provides us better footing when walking
through a life that feels unsure, uncomfortable and unstable. Following Him can
provide the confidence to know we’re not alone. The God of creation is with us.
Prayer: Lord, help me see the path You have set
before me that I may plant my feet in places You have already gone. Lead the way, Lord, that I may follow. In Jesus name, amen.
